Japanese Bondage Disciplines

Japanese Bondage is not entirely focused on rope, but rope does play a critical role in the overall Japanese fetish scene, and it is arguable the key element in bondage play.

We appreciate all forms of rope bondage at Jade Rope, but like to recognise the key disciplines that are largely derived from Japanese Bondage.

Four Bondage Disciplines

There are essentially four disciplines of rope bondage in the west.

  1. Hojojutsu - learn more about the hojojutsu discipline or buy ropes best for hojojutsu
  2. Shibari - learn more about the shibari discipline or buy ropes best for shibari
  3. Kinbaku - learn more about the kinbaku discipline or buy ropes best for kinbaku
  4. Fusion - learn more about the fusion discipline or buy ropes best for fusion

We do acknowledge the existence of other rope based bondage disciplines, however, at this time Jade Rope is mainly conversant in the four disciplines outlined above. Only Hojojutsu and Kinbaku are truely Japanese Bondage. Most Shibari found outside of Japan is potentially more acurately described as 'Japanese influenced rope bondage', and borders on Fusion or Western rope bondage.

Bondage Ropes

At Jade Rope we supply ropes that are specially sourced to meet the needs of rope bondage enthusiasts. Most ropes made with the need of Kinbaku in mind are perefectly suitable for Shibari and Fusion based rope bondage, but there are always personal preferences. People who prefer Fusion - followers of the Two Knotty Boys movement especially - tend to tie with thicker diameter ropes, and have a preference towards Nylon or other synthetic options.

In Japanese bondage, ropes are almost exclusively natural fibre and rarely exceed 6mm (1/4") in diameter. There is even a substantial shift towards 5mm (1/5").
